چکیده

By using a loop configuration formed by a polarization beam splitter, we experimentally demonstrate that the existing wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) sources in -band can be wavelength converted to the -band with low polarization sensitivity and low crosstalk. Using a fiber parametric amplifier as a band converter, we achieve experimentally 0.65-dB polarization sensitivity and 4.7-dB conversion efficiency over 30-nm conversion bandwidth in 315 m of fiber. Compared to the conventional straight fiber wavelength conversion scheme, a more than 2-dB improvement in polarization sensitivity is measured. In addition to the polarization insensitivity, channel crosstalk is measured to be 27 dB in 315 m of high nonlinearity fiber. In a detailed experimental study, the pattern of crosstalk in longer fiber lengths and the coupling between the polarization sensitivity and crosstalk are measured. For example, with a 430-m fiber length, we measure the degradation in polarization sensitivity to be 4 dB for 12-dB increased signal power. The experimental results are also confirmed by theoretical calculations. Moreover, in a 32 channels systems simulation, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the converted signals after 800-km propagation is calculated to be only 0.8-dB degraded compared to using laser diodes with the same initial SNR values. Furthermore, we calculate the effect of pump noise and show that the relative intensity noise of the pump is transferred to the converted signals with an additional 8-dB/Hz degradation.

Impact of Fourth-Order Dispersion Coefficient on the Gain Spectrum and the Saturation Behavior of One-Pump Fiber Optical Parametric Amplifiers

In this paper, the gain spectrum and the saturation behavior of one-pump fiber optical parametric amplifiers (1-P FOPAs) are investigated by taking into account the fourth-order dispersion coefficient b4 in the analysis. The results show that it is necessary to consider b4 in the analysis when the wavelength difference between the signal and pump waves is large enough and/or whenever the pump w...

Fiber-Based Optical Parametric Amplifiers and Their Applications

An applications-oriented review of optical parametric amplifiers in fiber communications is presented. The emphasis is on parametric amplifiers in general and single pumped parametric amplifiers in particular. While a theoretical framework based on highly efficient four-photon mixing is provided, the focus is on the intriguing applications enabled by the parametric gain, such as all-optical sig...

Broadband fiber optical parametric amplifiers.

The bandwidth of a single-pump fiber optical parametric amplifier is governed by the even orders of fiber dispersion at the pump wavelength. The amplifier can exhibit gain over a wide wavelength range when operated near the fiber's zero-dispersion wavelength. It can also be used for broadband wavelength conversion, with gain. We have experimentally obtained gain of 10-18 dB as the signal wavelen...

Effects of polarization-mode dispersion on fiber-based parametric amplification and wavelength conversion.

We present a vector theory of four-wave mixing in optical fibers and use it to discuss the effect of polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) on the performance of parametric amplifiers and wavelength converters. We show that PMD distorts the gain spectrum and makes it less uniform than that expected in the absence of residual birefringence. PMD also induces large fluctuations in the amplified or wav...
